Paddling the Creeks

Werner Boyce Salt Springs State Park is a water park first. Four miles of mangrove-lined Gulf coast sit behind a quiet launch on Salt Springs Creek, with marked paddles for people who want a short loop and enough unmarked water for anyone willing to read a tide table.

Bring your own kayak, canoe, or board. The old Paddling Adventures desk is closed, so there is no on-site rental counter on this site. The Florida State Parks page lists current concession hours if a later operator is open Thursday through Sunday.

Salt Springs Creek to the Gulf

From the racks, you slip into a narrow run that opens into salt marsh. Red buoys mark the in-park route through mangrove tunnels. At low tide the limestone lip of the tidal waterfall shows itself; two hours later you may paddle over the same rock without noticing it.

In July 2026 we walked the launch island after a windy week and found the picnic tables still clear, with one extra cart left at the racks for paddlers who had packed a folding hull in a van and needed a second set of wheels for the 0.2-mile walk from the lot.

In autumn 2022 a calm morning run to the Gulf edge took most first-time visitors about an hour, including photo stops for roseate spoonbills on the flats. Open water beyond the mangroves is a different job: stilt houses and Durney Key sit roughly another mile out, and only on a quiet day.

What to watch for

Wood storks, white ibis, and the occasional dolphin use the same channels. There is no swimming beach inside the park. If you want sand, Durney Key sits outside the boundary and is a separate decision, not a marked park trail.

Autumn 2022 the Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail still listed Hope Bayou as a primitive overnight stop. Pack as if you will carry every dry bag from the lot: there is no boat ramp, only the kayak launch and a cart path.
