A good day on Salt Springs Creek starts in the parking lot, not on the water. The launch is a short walk that feels long if a hull, two paddles, and a cooler are all in your hands at once. Pack as if you will make one trip with wheels, not three trips with aching shoulders.

Load order that actually works

Put the cart where you can reach it first. Soft bags and PFDs can ride on the hull. Keep the car keys in a zip pocket, not in a hatch you will forget until you are in the mangrove tunnel. If you arrived in a borrowed van or a loaded family vehicle, leave a clear aisle so the next person can still open a door in the U.S. 19 lot.

In July 2026 we watched a pair unload a tandem from a high roof and spend twenty minutes hunting for a missing skeg fin that had slid under a crate of snacks. Since then we tell guests: small boat parts live in one labelled pouch, packed last so they come out first.

On 21 January 2025 several birders asked whether a folding wagon is allowed on the Springs Trail. Wheels are fine on the boardwalk sections; please lift them on the sand spurs near the tidal pond so the planks stay clear for people carrying camera tripods.

Autumn 2022 the kiosk still recommended a cart for anyone bringing their own boat. That advice has not aged out. That season was the last time we saw a regular stack of courtesy carts at the racks; assume you will bring your own wheels now.

Day-bag list

• Water and a salty snack (the marsh wind dries you out faster than a lake paddle)
• Sun shirt, brim, and reef-safe lotion
• Dry bag for phone and park map printout
• Shoes that can get wet at the limestone lip
• Insect protection for still mangrove evenings
• A simple tide note for Port Richey so you are not surprised by the waterfall

If you are combining this stop with a longer household shuffle, pack the paddle kit as its own layer. Boards and dry bags crush when they sit under furniture. Keep them as the last items in, first items out, whether the vehicle is a compact or a van.
